The extension of the number 2 Streetcar system to Augsburg’s central clinic required several new building projects. In the case at hand, a computer-controlled operating system was to be installed to ensure the proper exchange of data and speech. For the construction, situated on the grassy strip of an intersection, a housing around four switch boxes had to be designed. The housing was to be easily accessible to maintenance and repair personnel and to provide a well-tempered working area. An arrangement of steel rectangular pipes supports the façade of shatterproof glass. The roof of the equilateral box consists of slatted timber panels, insulated and clad in TECU® brand copper.
To protect the glass and provide shade, a framework was attached to the stainless steel profiles, and this was used to support an 8 cm copper strip that was joined by adhesive to a stainless steel strip.
The irregularly wound strip wraps around the glass box and acts as a metaphor for the copper transformers transmitting radio signals from inside; the subject is turned inside out, exposing that which is normally hidden from the naked eye. During daylight hours there is a continual interplay of light and shadow – the image transforms itself in response to both the observer’s position and the sun. The copper strips glimmer in the sun and show their age as the colour changes over time.
