The museum island in Berlin is a unique ensemble of museums from the 19th and 20th centuries. An indispensable component of this island is the Bode Museum, from architect Ernst Eberhard. The Bode Museum was opened in 1904 as the Kaiser Friedrich Museum. As part of the overall museum restoration project, the design objective was to reinstate the original appearances of the two cupolas. As no original construction plans were available, the architects employed standard and aerial photos, virtual and real models, and archaeological surveys to reproduce the original design step by step. The cupola roofing consists of TECU® Classic bright rolled sheet copper in the form of small panels with a double seam attached to timber formwork. The large cupola is divided into eight, the smaller cupola into seven profiled sections. The eight former dormers of the large cupola were reconstructed, as was the corona. The old concrete corona of the smaller cupola was replaced with a copper corona supported by a stainless steel substructure. The new appearance of the cupolas, which revives the original architecture of the building, has been created through reconstruction of the overall and detail arrangement of the historic roof. This reinforces the distinguished appearance of the façade and brings out a dynamic vertical effect in an otherwise rather horizontally oriented building.
