The toll complex on the Viareggio Lucca Florence motorway route, designed by Ettore Piras of Genoa, is the first in a new generation of such facilities. The complex gives motorists a novel gateway into the city, while modern technology ensures peak efficiency. Characteristic design features include the 100% steel framework, the enclosed pedestrian walkway high above the roads, and the expansive roof. This roofing, totally clad with TECU® Oxid brand copper strips, rests upon a framework of six tubular steel arches which also suspend the cylindrical, partially glazed TECU® Oxid clad pedestrian walkway. Since the initial planning phase, TECU® has been the natural choice of building material for two reasons. Firstly, the modern and highly automated facilities of the new toll complex demand maintenance-free roof cladding and maximum longevity. Secondly, the material slowly produces a unique chromatic patina effect, which is perfectly suited to the surrounding landscape. The result is an auspicious landmark with an arched roof that harmoniously complements the undulating Lucca landscape the natural colours of the copper cladding and the other treated burnt sienna surfaces appear to reflect the shades of the surrounding countryside.
