The high-rise complex of the Royal Netherlands Navy officers quarters in Den Helder, designed by Van Herk &de Kleijn Architecten b.v. in Amsterdam, is actually composed of three structures forming a single edifice. The overlapping and virtually interconnected surfaces of the external façade visually unite the three structures. The interior of the building is illuminated by natural light from three directions. The entrance area and the corridors (which lead to the 157 rooms) create a pleasant and visually consistent communal space with a masterful combination of incident light and spatial design. The project requirements for the external cladding specified lightweight, maintenance-free construction, while high wind conditions at the site also needed to be considered. The dynamic coastal environment made TECU® Classic brand copper panels a natural choice for cladding the façade. The result is a structure that counterbalances the mostly grey façades of the surrounding buildings with both contrast and harmony. It will come to exude its own vitality as weathering slowly changes the colour of its copper surface. The rounded corners and inwardly folded edges of the copper cladding create a fascinating interplay of light and shade. A major design element is the indoor visual replication of the façade design, with partial glimpses of the outer shell visible through the windows. |
